“Jean de Béthencourt, the first conquistador of the Canary Islands, who settled in Lanzarote, launched the so-called ‘Canarian Raids on Barbary’ in 1405. From there, he brought back the first camels, along with a large group of slaves used to cultivate that barren land. This practice was replicated by subsequent rulers, giving rise to a unique identity in the island while fostering a complex symbolic bond between animal and human. Al mal engaño is filmed with a group of camel herders who live alongside the camels, serving as a space to explore relational imaginaries and unpredictable mimesis, at the dawn of the disappearance of their world.”
